Stepping Into Purpose

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
I Thessalonians 5:16-18

As we walk with the Lord we come to a point when we ask, “What is my purpose? What is the Lord calling me to do?” I don’t know about you, but I have a tendency to make things more complicated than they are. I picture these grand things the Lord has called me for and think I have to do them now. Though He may be calling us to grand things, He will take us step-by-step. We are patient with our children as they grow and learn to walk. God also offers us grace as we grow in our walk with Him.

The first step in finding our purpose is to turn to Scripture. There we find we are to love, forgive, comfort and encourage each other. We are to rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn (Romans 12:15). To breathe life into others as the Lord has breathed life into us.

We find our purpose as we are in relationship with Christ. This year we have dug in and found our value and identity in Christ. As we continue to breathe in those truths we will sense His purpose being birthed in us. We must continue to seek the Lord and nurture that on-going relationship with Him. It’s only then we will truly know each step He’s calling us to.

Digging Deeper:

Dig into scripture and find the verses that talk about purpose or God’s will. Find some that speak to you and write them where you can see them every day. Here are some verses to get you started. With each one, ask yourself, “What is the Lord calling me to do?”
Colossians 3:12-14, Romans 12:2, I Thessalonians 4:3-4 & 7, Isaiah 30:21, Psalm 143:10

Ask the Lord to reveal to you what steps to take to follow the purpose He has for you. Pray for clarity and thank Him the plans He has for you.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13
