Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand —shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16 (MSG)
Does your family know that you are a Christian? Do your co-workers know that your heart belongs to Jesus? Would a stranger at the grocery store notice that there’s something different about you, something not of this world? Jesus tells us in Matthew 5 and in other places in Scripture, that we are to be the light to the world. That He is the light in the darkness. So, if He lives inside of us, if our body is a dwelling place for Holy Spirit, then we, too, are a light to the darkness.
Sometimes I have had thoughts that I do not want others to look at me. I do not want them to use me as a moral compass to their life. I want to fly under the radar, go unnoticed, just hide in my little corner of the world and live my life. But a light in a dark place cannot be hidden. Even if you put a light under a basket, the light will seep out through the cracks. The light of Jesus can not be concealed and it was not meant to be contained! You precious daughter have the honored calling of spreading the light of the universe to everyone around you. Your purpose is to allow God’s light to shine out of you and spread it’s warmth on those that meet you. This does not mean that you have to be the super bubbly, Mrs. Positive every day – you will have rough days.
But it does mean that people are watching you. They are observing how you respond to your bad days. They are listening to how you talk about your boss after he was unfair to you. They notice if you are greedy with your life or generous with it.
Your purpose is to allow God’s warm, healing, loving light to shine out of you. To live a life that points others to Christ. To beckon others one step closer to Jesus. It is Holy Spirit’s job to open their hearts to God’s saving grace. You are not responsible for their salvation, but you are responsible for the light He has placed within you. Go sister. Shine your light for all to see!
