Hidden in the Shadow of the Almighty

Before I was born the LORD called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name. He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver.
Isaiah 49:2-3

You can feel it. A longing…a gnawing deep inside you. The calling of your Creator to do what you were created for. It stirs you. You open the Scriptures for direction. The words leap off the page putting fire in your bones. Through Scripture the Lord speaks to you your purpose. You yearn to fulfill it, but for some reason it’s not time yet. There’s an excitement in the air as somehow you know the Lord is playing one of His grandest compositions. You know the time for your part is coming. You can feel it. You can almost grab hold of it.

But… it’s just beyond your grasp.

You can see how experiences in life have been preparing you.

Yet here you sit, in God’s waiting room. Invisible in plain sight.

You are hidden in the shadow of the Almighty. It’s that place where all the circumstances in your life are going in a different direction than what the Lord has shown you. Just like David, who was anointed as king in his youth, yet was on the run for years. Or Joseph, whose destiny was revealed by God in a dream, but before that happened, found himself in Egypt… in jail. God had put a destiny in their hearts and yet their circumstances screamed a different future for them.

Hidden in the shadow of the Almighty is a difficult place to be. You don’t know how long you’ll be there. You can’t see what’s ahead and you may wonder if you heard from the Lord or it was just some crazy dream you dared to believe. If you can identify with this, take heart because the shadow of the Almighty, although difficult at times, is a great place to be.

There are many reasons we find ourselves in this place. The Lord could be protecting us from something. He may want to develop our character or deepen our relationship with Him. Sometimes we may need to rest before the next season comes. No matter what the reason, always remember we may be hidden from the rest of the world, but we are never hidden from the Lord. God knows right where you are. He has not forgotten about you or His plans and promises to you. Trust in the Lord and follow Him closely.

Digging Deeper:

Meditate on the story of Joseph found in Genesis 37, 39-45 or King David’s story found in I Samuel 17-31.  It can be easy to fall into complaining as you wait upon the Lord, but instead practice praising Him and give Him thanks in the midst of waiting.
