“Let all things be done decently and in order.” 1 Corinthians 14:40 (NKJ)
“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rules or authorities–all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:16-17 (ESV)
Ever since the beginning of time, God’s desire was to bring His established order into all of His glorious creation. Genesis begins by saying “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” What an incredibly powerful picture that is painted here. It says the earth was “without form and void.” These words translate to express one main concept–chaos. Without the Spirit of God, there was no life. But at the spoken word of God, “light be,” life was created and order was established.
In the garden, Adam and Eve thrived under the divine order of God. They walked and talked with Him in the cool of the day, He gave them dominion over the animals of the earth, not to mention He provided them with food and drink of plenty. He supplied them with all they needed to have life, and have it abundantly in the garden. He even set up healthy boundaries for them, knowing that outside of those boundaries, life would forever be changed for them and they would be separated from their one true source of life.
Order was created to establish healthy boundaries for your life too. God knew the temptations and hardships you would face outside of His design. Why won’t God just let you do what you want? Because He knew you would end up hurting yourself and hurting others. He saw what would happen when everyone began to live for themselves…the same thing that happened in the garden…separation from Him. Pastor Les described sin as “the fulfillment of a God-given appetite in a non-God approved way.” Going outside of God’s perfect order to meet and satisfy our human appetites creates chaos, hurt, confusion, and sin. All of these things try to separate you from the love of your Heavenly Father and the purposes He has for your life. I love that God filled the Bible with encouraging words to help us live a life of order. He passionately talks of money, sex, relationships, emotions, finances, marriages, and desires. Not only does He speak of them, but faithfully shows us how they should be lived out to remain safe within His order.
Although God pretty much thought of everything, there are those questions in our life that don’t have answers on the pages of Scripture. That is why He sent the Holy Spirit to be the helper who dwells inside us. He gives you discernment and guidance to help you navigate through those sticky situations in life. What situation do you find yourself in that is tempting you to move outside the order that God has established for you? Write them down. Search through Scripture and remind yourself of the healthy boundaries the Lord has established for you to help keep you and others from harm. Ask Him to help strengthen your Spirit, and to help you resist temptation and the schemes of the enemy. Remember, you were made to live a life different from that of the world and the Holy Spirit was sent to you so you wouldn’t have to do it alone.
