Jesus’ Girls

When we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours. Romans 1:12 (NLT)

It had been almost three months since I’d last seen my “Jesus girls.”  Life just got busy –life is always busy.  Even though I’d been sitting with Jesus daily, my heart yearned for the fellowship of my friends – my girls – my peeps.  These are the women who “get” me.  The women I can be myself with and not ever feel judged, only accepted.  These are the women who inspire me and encourage me.  They hold me accountable and tell me when I’m “acting a fool.”  They laugh with me, and they cry with me.  They hold up my arms, when I am too weak to do so on my own.  And I do the same for them, because…

They are my Jesus girls.  My tribe.  My family.

Each of us is designed for fellowship.  We are made in God’s image – a beautiful image of fellowship and community (Genesis 1:26).  Somewhere in our innermost being, we long for connection.  We crave it, we seek it, we need it.  It is only made complete by the work of Jesus, but it is sweetened by the fellowship of our sisters.

I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes, and my heart, even as I pulled into the driveway.  I needed to see them, to hear their stories, to smell the aroma of fresh brewed coffee, to taste the goodness of companionship and to be stirred and filled again by conversations with and about Him.  I needed all of this, but mostly, I needed to just be.

I opened the door, forty-five minutes after they had already been conversing, uncomfortable about interrupting, but not ashamed or embarrassed.  They looked up, saw me, shrieked, grinned and embraced me in their arms.  I couldn’t keep it inside anymore, so I cried.  They didn’t ask me why, they didn’t have to – they get it.  They get me.

They are my Jesus girls.  My tribe. My family.

We are meant to do life together – to encourage and build one another up (1 Thessalonians 5:11) and comfort one another with the comfort we have received from God (2 Corinthians 1:4).  We need each other.  Let us glean wisdom from one another, and cheer each other on, so that we don’t grow weary, but instead we press on in the race together.  Not competing against one another, or comparing our differences, but running together – for our King and our Lord – to bring glory and honor to His name, and winning souls for His Kingdom.  Let’s all be Jesus’ girls together!

Every girl is invited.  Every girl is welcome.  Every girl is loved.

Beautifully said. I can’t wait to be back together with my sisters of all ages. I’ve missed every one of them.
