Not long ago my husband said to me, “We look like a family of horders in this house.” It took me off guard because I’m not the kind of person to keep unwanted our useless items. In fact, I actually enjoy throwing stuff away. However, as I looked around I saw piles. Piles of clothes, books, papers, even trash that I strategically placed somewhere and due to the busyness of the day or week or month never got it moved to the can outside. Christine’s teaching this week at Hearts hit home with all of us. You may say, “I don’t have any idols in my life…oh that?…that’s just some stuff I haven’t gone through yet.” However, every daughter of God needs to take inventory of the “piles” of stuff in our lives and we may be surprised at what we find.
Things that we can raise above God in our lives include: lonliness, fear, pain, lack of faith, work, hobbies, possessions, and habits…
How do we clean house?
- Detect – what are some idols, some clutter that you can identify?
- De-clutter – what are some things that you can do to get rid of those idols?
- Detach – is there anything that you need to “take a break” from?
- Determine – that we are not going back! What can you do to make sure the idols don’t creep back in? Deuteronomy 6:4-5
